Huge Mistake!

If that's your culture, I'm sure you're seeing employee engagement and satisfaction crash through the floor and productivity decline to levels of distress.

Asking vs. listening: What the difference means for employee engagement | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
There's a difference between asking employees for feedback and listening to them. Learn how to apply active listening tips to employee engagement surveys.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

In my webinar/workshop on Managing Remotely in a Crisis, I've been talking about the need to extend 1-to-1 coaching sessions throughout the entire managerial ranks.

One of the issues that surfaced with a group of CEOs the other day on one of these workshops was that they felt personally they were a poor listener and that the management team had no idea of how to listen effectively since they had never done any training.

This is a good reminder of the key elements of effective listening. It's very hard to coach when you don't listen.

Micromanagement Doesn't Work In The Office, So Why Inflict It On People Working From Home? | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
The need to work from home during the pandemic has triggered a sharp increase in the interest of many companies in software packages to monitor their employees. But just because technology allows us to do certain things, doesn't mean that doing so is a good idea.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

The article on Forbes attempts to dispel the traditional command and control management approach of time studies and tracking how much people are in front of their computers.

"If your company’s culture is based on micromanagement, think about how to manage the transition away from it."

Let's transition to using OKRs, outcomes, deliverables, expectations, KPIs, and metrics to determine if people are being successful instead of control mechanisms to see when they are working.

6 tips on remote work success during COVID-19 | Canadian HR Reporter | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
Regular check-ins, relaxed rules, leadership support among solutions...
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Here's my key take away from the article (there was some other good information about communication and the cadence of check-ins):

“Most people are probably worried about where they stand from a job standpoint. HR departments should definitely be open to having people talk to them about anxieties related to their job security, that’s a huge one. You may even want your leadership to pre-empt some of those worries by getting in front of that question. I took the time to actually let people know I’m available if you are worried about job security: ‘Come and talk to me.’ I’m going to tell you all the things that we’re going to do before they even have to worry about that.’”

Are you or your management team members having these conversations? Do your front line employees feel reassured?
