A decent article in Fast Company to consider the development/refinement of your culture in a virtual/remote world. My big question is: Are you doing anything right now to be working on improving your culture or is this at the bottom of your priority list?

With up to 20% of staff turnover happening within the first 45 days on the job, it’s vital that leaders ensure the dream sold at interview is every part the reality, argues Kerry Drury....
Barry Deutsch's insight:

First the bad news: 20% turnover in first 45 days. Horrible!

What I liked about the article was what has been known up to this point as an on-boarding plan - takes on a new dimension as a customized employee engagement plan for each new hire.

What if you did this with every new hire?

Are you struggling to communicate with your colleagues and employees now that most of us are working from home? Here are some useful communication tips.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

My experience with CEOs in the entrepreneurial sector is that communication during this crisis is woefully inadequate. Many CEOs are allowing the same cadence of communication to occur that went on when everyone was in the office.

Huge Mistake!

If that's your culture, I'm sure you're seeing employee engagement and satisfaction crash through the floor and productivity decline to levels of distress.

Thoughtful article summarizing Gallup Employee Engagement Findings and some specific recommendations on improving employee engagement centered around listening/feedback, defining expectations, and recognition.

Pretty simple stuff! Why then are so few companies practicing it? Why do so many managers/executives seem not to care about making changes to raise employee engagement - as in "it's good enough."

11 of the Most Enlightening Employee Engagement Statistics

11 of the Most Enlightening Employee Engagement Statistics | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
Why is employee engagement important? Here are 11 statistics that show why increased employee engagement has significant business impact.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Positively scary statistics about employee engagement. I've been preaching these issues for about a decade.

Unfortunately, most companies have ignored me. Everyone has been too busy being reactive during the last decade of economic expansion. We're too busy to work on things that are important, but are not urgent.

Now we're reached a point where it is urgent also. As we emerge in 6-12 months from the current recession, will you emerge stronger and retain your best people - or will you try to pick up where you left off and potentially lose some of your best talent. Fixing these organizational/cultural issues are critical if you want to build a stronger organization.

Here's a contrarian view of why self-run internal employee recognition programs fail. Granted, the authors are biased since they are recommending their software SaaS model. However, I've see an extraordinary explosion in some very good SaaS apps for companies to more effectively manage employee engagement - apps for tracking success factors, projects, recognition programs, employee satisfaction, and many others.

Jack Welch's Masterclass On Employee Engagement: 'In a Business, There Are Two Measurements That Count' | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
Jack Welch, the legendary chief executive who transformed General Electric into one of the most successful companies of the last century during his tenure died today according to media reports. He was 84.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Good summary in Chief Executive Magazine by Jack Welch regarding his two primary areas of focus - employee engagement and customer satisfaction - both of which are intimately linked.

He talks about helping employees understand what's expected, where the vision is/where you're headed, what their impact will be on it, and what it means to them personally.

I find most companies fall short in this level of communication below the executive level. Very few employees understand what's expected, where the company is headed, what their specific role/impact is in that vision, and how it translates to something personal for them. Without this communication and training managers how to do it frequently - most companies fail to achieve decent levels of engagement and consequently suffer on customer satisfaction - and the related financial metrics.

6 tips on remote work success during COVID-19 | Canadian HR Reporter | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
Regular check-ins, relaxed rules, leadership support among solutions...
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Here's my key take away from the article (there was some other good information about communication and the cadence of check-ins):

“Most people are probably worried about where they stand from a job standpoint. HR departments should definitely be open to having people talk to them about anxieties related to their job security, that’s a huge one. You may even want your leadership to pre-empt some of those worries by getting in front of that question. I took the time to actually let people know I’m available if you are worried about job security: ‘Come and talk to me.’ I’m going to tell you all the things that we’re going to do before they even have to worry about that.’”

Are you or your management team members having these conversations? Do your front line employees feel reassured?

If you're not a member of the top executive team, has your manager taken the time to give you comfort the future of your job?

81% Of Unhappy Employees Fake Happiness At Work—Here’s How To Find Fulfillment

81% Of Unhappy Employees Fake Happiness At Work—Here’s How To Find Fulfillment | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
I'm giving you a lot to think about here because these statistics on employees faking happiness at work are pretty compelling....
Barry Deutsch's insight:

If 81% of unhappy employees fake happiness and 50-70% are not engaged/unhappy at work - that's a big problem. When mainstream publications like Forbes start to highlight this as an issue - executives should sit up and take notice before it's too late.

In my retention workshop, one of the biggest frustrations executives mention is a concern of a lack of working hard, productivity, and effort. Duh - you're not seeing it because so many of your employees are not engaged and are unhappy.

The big question is: what's your action plan to fix it?
