Why Companies Have to Rethink How to Treat Working Parents in a Post-Pandemic Culture

Why Companies Have to Rethink How to Treat Working Parents in a Post-Pandemic Culture | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
As millions of workers have transitioned into working from home over the past few months, state and local governments have, in turn, issued COVID-19 restriction mandates that require employers to adapt accordingly.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Something to think about - your working parents - whether they will continue to work from home or come into the office now that restrictions are being eliminated.

Are you setting your organization up as a great place to work because of your sensitivity, empathy, caring toward family issues, and parents struggling with at-home issues?

The great part of working for an entrepreneurial company is the flexibility and family style atmosphere  - is that really the case in your actions as we cycle through this Crisis?

Improve employee happiness by hiring the right candidates

According a research made by Oxford University – employees are 13% more productive when they are happy. Many companies have already understood this and have started to focus more of their efforts to keep the employee satisfaction score high.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

An interesting idea in this article of focusing on recruiting messaging. The quote I liked:

"Start by attracting candidates to an employee community, not to a job. People usually are attracted by concrete role. But they want also to join an organization they feel a shared alignment and purpose with."

How do you help candidates "feel" the shared purpose?

Is Your Leadership Disengaged?

Is Your Leadership Disengaged? | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
When you as a leader are disengaged, it causes your employees to be disengaged.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Are some of your managers who lead the bulk of your employees having issues about their own engagement. Front line employees observe this attitude and become disengaged when their boss is disengaged.

Here's the quote that reinforced this idea:

"Leader disengagement often happens for the same reasons as employee disengagement. They don’t feel respected by their manager, they don’t feel like they have a say in decision making, and they aren’t kept in the loop in terms of communication. Finally, they usually don’t receive enough positive feedback and appreciation themselves as leaders. Lack of leader motivation and engagement tends to breed cynicism, sarcasm, and negativity in the leader."

5 Tips for Maintaining Company Culture in Remote Teams

5 Tips for Maintaining Company Culture in Remote Teams | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
At Maven Wave, building a partially remote workforce that feels just as much a part of our close-knit team as the onsite employees have been integral to our success as a company. Every year, we win awards for our culture and growth, and we’ve learned a lot of lessons along the way.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

Here's the quote that reinforces most of the attitudes about remote work.

“If I can’t see them working, how do I know they’re actually working?”

This sums up the managerial attitude of the vast majority of my clients. It covers for the excuse of not investing time to define expectations, conduct on-going performance management through one-to-ones, and learning how to coach teams.

Rather than staying stuck in a 1070s command-control mode, when we start working on the things that raise employee engagement and lead to increased productivity, we actually don't have to see our subordinates doing work to trust they are being productive.

I know it's hard to let go of tribal management practices and the tactics that most managers were taught (direct line of sight). The question is when will you start experimenting with best practices to unleash the productivity in your employees that you are missing?

Barry Deutsch's insight:

Key points in this article about keeping it personal and not micro-managing. Unfortunately, we seem to violate both ideas.

While folks are working from home, many managers appear to have slipped into a mode of only talking about tasks and activities, and have forgotten how to show empathy, appreciation, caring, and sensitivity for their team members. Maybe it's time for some remedial managerial training on empathy.

Reducing 'effort' in performance management backfires

Reducing 'effort' in performance management backfires | Retain Top Talent | Scoop.it
Many organisations are keen to reduce the effort that managers and employees put into performance management, but research suggests this doesn't make systems more effective.
Barry Deutsch's insight:

The article suggests research indicates that decreasing the time and effort spent in performance management has negative effects. Duh! It goes on to suggest ways to improve the traditional performance management process of annual reviews.

My recommendation is blow up your traditional performance management annual appraisal process. At best, it's a sadistic process that everyone hates and most feel is useless.

Instead, we should all be moving to a monthly, dynamic, coaching conversation of on-going performance management.
